Sydney Shocker: John Longmire Quits being coach of the Sydney Swans

John Longmire has decided to resign being head coach for the Sydney Swans after 14 years at the helm. John Longmire has been involved with the Sydney Swans since 2002 being assistant coach for Rodney Eade and Paul Roos, Longmire got offered to coach the Swans in 2011 in which he accepted. Sydney have announced that assistant coach Dean Cox will be the new head coach for the footy club.

John Longmire coached sydney to 12 out of his 14 years to finals and have won 3 minor premierships and took them to 5 grand finals with winning a premiership in 2012. Longmire is the longest serving coach in the club's history coaching 333 games and has a winning percetneage of 63% over his coaching tender with the Sydney Swans. People could argue that John Longmire is one of the greatest AFL coaches in the last decade.

Even though John Longmire is no longer the coach with the Swans he will still be involved with the footy club becoming an executive director of the club performance. John Longmire said in his press confrence "I just needed time after the grand final to refelct and feel if I could go one more season and in the end I decided I did not have that drive." The club and Longmire both said "that this was his last contract and if he did stay in 2025 that would be his last season at the club."

While teleling the players that he was going to not coach the club he said "I got a little emotional", which is very understandable becasue he has drafted most of the players that are in the squad and coached some players for more than 5-10 years. John Longmire new that Sydney needed a succesion plan when he got offered his last contract in 2023 becasue he was undecided if he could coach the 2 extra years.


Moving forward for Sydney is now seeing the change, that Dean Cox will make with the playing style and structure, becasue Cox has been an assistant coach for the swans for 8 years so he will understad how to get this club a change to win a premiership.
