With the 2024 Trade period underway, we will have a look at what moves clubs are likely to make and what deals have already been completed. With the 2024 season in the books, many clubs are looking to strengthen their sides and bring in new talent to push for the 2025 premiership.
Adelaide Crows
Adelaide has already had a number of players committed to the Crows for 2025 and beyond, with Alex Neal-Bullen joining the side to view a trade for Pick 28 going to the Demons. A pair of free-agent Giants have also signed on with the Crows, with young midfielder James Peatling and defender Issac Cumming committing to the Crows. Adelaide hasn’t had to do much chasing this off-season, with only Jack Lukosius the only player falling through the cracks.

Brisbane Lions
The biggest question for the Lions this off-season is how they will replace key forward Joe Daniher. Brisbane has confirmed that they will look around the league at other clubs contracted key forwards, with the likes of Tom Lynch at the forefront of speculation. Brisbane will have a batch of young talent coming in next year, with the younger brother of Will Ashcroft, Levi, set to join the Lions through father-son.
Carlton Blues
The Blues remain in the race for two-time All-Australian Dan Houston but are unwilling to give up their first-round pick for this year’s draft, and Port Adelaide isn’t willing to settle for anything less under that price. Carlton is reportedly trying to acquire Gold Coast’s Pick 13 to facilitate the deal, but it is a hot commodity. Giants defender Nick Haynes has already joined the Blues via Free Agency, and there are a number of Blues up for trade discussion, with Matt Owies without a contract and Matt Kennedy and Lewis Young told to look around the league for a trade.
Collingwood Magpies
Collingwood is the second club in the race for Dan Houston, with the Pies also trying to acquire pick 13 from the Suns. The Pies have a way to facilitate this trade, with John Noble requesting a trade to the Suns; the Pies would likely have to part way with their future first-round pick as well as John Noble to get the deal done. Young half-forward Joe Richards has requested a trade to Port Adelaide, which could also become a factor in the Dan Houston trade. Former Giant Harry Perryman has also signed with the Pies on the first day of Free Agency.

Essendon Bombers
Forward Jake Stringer could be on the move from the Bombers, with the Giants likely suitors, after Collingwood and Sydney stated they wouldn’t be pursuing the move. The Bombers have been linked to unsigned forward Tim Membrey, and if Essendon does choose to move on from Jake Stringer, Membrey would be his likely replacement. Conor Stone, Josh Rotham and Finn Maginness are all on Essendon’s radar.
Fremantle Dockers
Richmond forward Shai Bolton shapes as Fremantle’s number-one trade priority, with the Tigers asking for two of the Dockers first-rounders. Other players on Fremantle’s radar are Sydney’s Chad Warner and Melbourne’s Kysiah Pickett, with these deals less likely to happen than the Bolton trade.
Geelong Cats
Geelong is set to bring in Bailey Smith from the Western Bulldogs, with the restricted free agent nominating Geelong as his preferred destination. With speculation around Clayton Oliver’s future, Geelong seems like the most likely destination if Oliver requests a trade, but Melbourne has stated that there is no plan to move on from him. Delisted Carlton forward Jack Martin will make his way down the highway, joining Geelong as a free agent.

Gold Coast Suns
Gold Coast’s first-round pick will likely be the catalyst for Dan Houston’s move to Victoria, with John Noble likely to move to the Suns, and could be a part of the trade for pick 13. Daniel Rioli is also likely to join the Suns via trade, with Richmond looking to bolster their picks for this year’s draft. Free agent Elliott Himmelberg has also joined the Suns after leaving the Adelaide Crows.
GWS Giants
The Giants have been linked to Essendon forward Jake Stringer after he wasn’t offered a second year on his contract by the Bombers. With Harry Perryman and Issac Cumming both departing the club, the Giants received two first-round picks which are currently pick 16 and pick 21. The Giants have also shown some interest in Essendon Midfielder Dylan Shiel, who is contracted for another season at the Bombers.
Hawthorn Hawks
Hawthorn is set to send its first-round pick to the Eagles for star defender Tom Barras and has signed defender Josh Battle as well, securing their backline for a potential premiership run in 2025. After being linked early in the trade period to Bailey Smith and Harry Perryman, the Hawks look very settled in the acquisitions of Battle and Barrass.
Melbourne Demons
With speculation around Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver, the Demons looked like they were in for a busy trade period. The club stated that both Petracca and Oliver would be at the club for the future. Young swingman from the Giants, Wade Derksen, has caught the Demon’s attention. The Demons also acquired veteran ruckman Tom Campbell via free agency, bolstering the ruck depth, and Alex Neal-Bullen left the club for family reasons via trade, heading back home to Adelaide, which saw Melbourne receive pick 28.

North Melbourne
The Roos remain in play for Dan Houston, if Collingwood or Carlton can’t get the deal done, North Melbourne holds the best package for the Power, likely sending their future first-round pick to Port Adelaide. The Roos are also set to bring in some veterans of the league, with Jack Darling joining via trade, and Luke Parker and Caleb Daniel joining the young Roos as well.
Port Adelaide Power
With Dan Houston likely to leave the Power, the side will be looking to head to the draft and bolster their young talent. Ruckman Ivan Soldo is set to head to St Kilda after just one season at the club. Gold Coast’s Jack Lukosius has nominated Port Adelaide as his preferred destination, but the Power will have to pay the price, with his contract set to be close to $1 million per year. The Power are also after small forward Riley Garcia from the Bulldogs, with these acquisitions set to improve their lacklustre forward line.
Richmond Tigers
Contracted forward Shai Bolten is set to join Fremantle as the Tigers look to bring in as many draft picks as possible. Liam Baker has also requested a trade to Western Australia, likely to land at the Eagles, with the pick that the Eagles receive from Hawthorn in the Barass deal likely to head the Tigers way. Defender Daniel Rioli is likely to join his former coach at the Gold Coast, and midfielder Jack Graham has joined the Eagles via Free Agency. The Tigers look to capitalise on their batch of players leaving and go into this year’s draft with as many first-rounders as possible.

St Kilda Saints
St Kilda is in talks with the Bulldogs to get Jack Macrae over to the Saints and is also expected to land Ivan Soldo from the Power. The Saints have a perfect opportunity this year to bolster their young talent, with two picks In the top 10, after receiving band one compensation from Josh Battle's move to the Hawks.
Sydney Swans
After the Swan’s Grand Final defeat, they are set to go into the next season with pretty much the same squad. With Luke Parker set to join the Kangaroos, the Swans will likely receive a third-rounder as well as their picks to head into the draft.
West Coast Eagles
With Liam Baker set to head to the Eagles, it will be fascinating to see how the deal gets done, and it could heavily impact both club’s trade periods. Free Agent Jack Graham has joined the Eagles and is set to bolster their midfield. The Eagles will look to focus on the draft and nail their selection to help them build for the future.
Western Bulldogs
The Dogs are reported to have an interest in GWS utility Xavier O’Halloran but have a four-year deal on the table from the Giants. The Dogs midfielder will likely look a lot different next year with Jack Macrae and Bailey Smith set to leave via trade, but the Dogs are willing to hold out to the last minute to get the best deal for their club. Veteran Caleb Daniel is also likely to depart the side, after falling out of favour with Luke Beveridge.
