Melbourne is set to host multiple NFL games in the coming years

According to the Herald Sun, the Melbourne Cricket Ground will host a total of three NFL games in Australia, with the first being played in 2026.

Australian offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, spoke to the media today about what it would mean to have an NFL match played in Australia.

“It’d mean a lot to have the game back home just for eyes and viewership,” he said.

“I really want this sport to grow back home, and if we can bring a game there in order to generate interest and keep the growth of the game going, that would mean a lot to me.

“The best thing about football is that you can play at any size and weight.

“I think that’s what makes this sport beautiful.”

Mailata is currently preparing to play in his second Super Bowl and will seek revenge against Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs after they beat the Eagles 38-35 in the 2023 Super Bowl.

Mailata and his offensive line stood tall in their dominant 55-23 victory over the Commanders last week in a do-or-die playoff match.

They were able to successfully open up lanes and opportunities for Philadelphia’s highly talented offence in their run game and pass protection.

The Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles, who both have international marketing rights to Australia, are the two teams tipped to participate in this highly anticipated match.

The NFL has recently ramped up its global marketing and expansion efforts by already having played games in Germany, Mexico, Brazil, and London.

Mailata, who is one of the highest-paid offensive tackles in the NFL, will become the first Australian to play in two Super Bowls, as his Eagles will look to stop the Kansas City three-peat.
