Aussie offensive tackle Jordan Mailata aiming for Super Bowl revenge

Jordan Mailata and his Philadelphia Eagles are aiming to avenge their 2023 Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs after a strong 14-3 season that saw them win the NFC East division.

Mailata, who was born in New South Wales and was a former rugby player, was scouted by NFL executives after seeing his highlights and was invited to trial for the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. Mailata was eventually selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 233rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft and has since had a meteoric rise in the NFL.

In early 2024, Mailata signed an incredible three-year extension worth $100 million across three seasons, keeping him an Eagle until the end of the 2028 season.

Mailata has played a large role in Philadelphia’s high-powered run game this season, boosted by the acquisition of star running back Saquon Barkley. Mailata and his offensive line are ranked #2 in the NFL for run blocking and #5 in pass blocking, making them the only team in the league to be top five in both.

After their dramatic 28-22 victory against the LA Rams in the Divisional round, the Eagles now face the Washington Commanders, who beat the NFC’s one-seeded and heavily favoured Detroit Lions.

Mailata and his Eagles will host the Commanders, who are one of their biggest rivals and their divisional opponent, next week in an NFC Championship that is set to be an instant classic.

In their two games this year, they have split the season series 1-1 after Philly won in week 11 26-18, and the Commanders stormed home for a famous divisional victory in week 16 that saw Jayden Daniels deliver a game-winning touchdown pass with only seconds left to play.

The winner of this NFC championship decider will play either Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills or the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.
