The Hobart Hurricanes are BBL|14 champions.

Hurricanes star batsman Mitch Owen scored a massive 108 runs off 42 balls to lead his team to a seven wicket win over the Sydney Thunder and their maiden BBL title.

It was a shaky start for the Hurricanes, as Thunder opening batsman Jason Sangha and David Warner built a solid opening partnership of 97 runs off the first ten overs.

It was Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis who broke the partnership, getting Warner out caught behind for 48.

Ellis and fast bowler Riley Meredith fought hard to keep the Thunder to a reachable target after a hot start, whilst Thunder batsman Sam Billings, Ollie Davies and Chris Green tried to get their side to a match winning total.

The Thunder finished on 7/182, with Ellis and Meredith taking three wickets each.

Enter Mitch Owen.

Opening the batting for the Hurricanes, Owens was ready to attack the Thunder’s bowlers from the get-go.

Scoring 14 runs in the first over of the innings, Owens, with Caleb Jewell playing a supporting role, took the Hurricanes to 0/74 off the Powerplay.

When Owens made his half century, all but one of his runs had come from boundaries.

He didn’t stop there though, continuing to hit everything that came his way with ease and scoring his century off 39 balls, tying with Craig Simmons for the equal fastest century in the BBL.

Owens finished his innings on 108 off 42, hitting six fours and 11 sixes.

It was batsman Ben McDermott and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade (who appeared to have a war of words with his Thunder counterpart, Billings) who finished the job for the Hurricanes, with McDermott sending a ramp shot to the boundary to score the winning runs.

Unsurprisingly, it was the home town hero Owens who received the man of the match honours after taking his team to their first ever title.
