By Connor Stewart

The 2024 AFL Women's season has come to an end in which North Melbourne won the AFL W premiership over the Brisbane Lions in the first night grand final. Today we will discuss what were the major storylines in the 2024 season and discuss if the storyline was positive or negative from the clubs, media, and fans.

School Holiday Fixture:

The AFL W decided for four weeks during the school holiday period they would have games on Tuesday-Sunday throughout the week, in which all teams had to play two games in the same week. This decison backfired has during the mid week games there was basically very minimum fans attending the game, which it does not help trying to draw attention for AFL W. People did complain about the fixturing becassue who would want to attened a Tuesday or a Wednesday night game, also having it for four weeks was too long they should have shortened it to two or possible three weeks.

First Expansion Team Winning AFL W Premiership:

The most recent storyline for the Women's AFL Season was North Melbourne becomimg the first expansion team to win the AFL W Premiership. AFL W has been a competition since 2017 during the span of 2017-2023 and eight seasons of the comp the orignal team have always won the premiership until this year. This is such a big story becasue now all the expansion teams are catching up with the eight origninal team and making it a proper competition and also making moves in the off season to get their team contending for a premiership.

First AFL W Night Grand Final:

The Grand final that was played at Ikon park between North Melbourne and Brisbane Lions became the first night grand final in the AFL W and the third ever night grand final with 2020 and 2021 AFL Men's Grand final getting played at night due to Covid. The decison have the night grand final for the Women's grand final was becasue the afl wanted to test it to see if they can do in the future for the Men's grand final. It got mixed response, North Melbourne boss Jen Watt said "The AFL must keep the grand final accessible to young children" and belives the night grand final is too young for children. On the other hand North Melbourne Captain Emma Kearney said "The night grand final was very special" and belives that she could see the AFL and AFL W host night grand finals in the future.
